Absorbed Glass Mat Technology.

NorthStar uses innovative Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) thin plate technology to deliver superior performance.

AGM batteries differ from flooded lead acid batteries in that the electrolyte is absorbed in glass mats, as opposed to freely flooding the plates. Very thin glass fibers are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime. This increased surface area and increased electrolyte are part of why NorthStar AGM batteries have such high energy density. This design also means NorthStar AGM Batteries can be recharged much faster than flooded lead-acid batteries.

NorthStar AGM batteries have a longer expected float life of 12+ years, with high stable voltage delivery. They also have the widest operating temperature range, delivering superior performance at lower temperatures.

"AGM batteries are maintenance free, safer for the environment, and safer to use."

AGM batteries are maintenance free, safer for the environment, and safer to use - they have no water levels to check or terminals to clean, without risks of dangerous acid spills, and can be installed in any position. They are classified as “Non-spillable Batteries” for convenient shipping, with a shelf life of more than two times that of conventional lead-acid batteries.

NorthStar AGM batteries are used in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, cable TV, emergency lighting, load leveling, hybrid electric vehicles, engine start, uninterrupted power supply, computer back-up, medical equipment, solar power, data processing, electronic, defense, aviation, oil and gas industry, and material handling.

NorthStar uses an advanced version of this technology in our AGM Thin Plate Pure Lead and AGM Thin Plate Lead Carbon batteries.

This cross section of a NorthStar AGM battery shows the internal design. The white fiberglass separators shown between the plates are soaked in the acid electrolyte solution, absorbing it, hence the term Absorbed Glass Mat.

The thin plate design is shown more clearly on the left. The plates are thin enough that a high number can be installed inside the battery.

AGM Thin Plate Pure Lead Batteries

High Temp

The NSB HT RED Battery® delivers long life in unreliable grid conditions even at high temperature, with a design life of 15+ years at 20°C (68°F) and extra long life at high temp operation of 40°C (104°F).

Our unique pure lead electrochemistry increases power density and temperature resistance, while reducing corrosion and component aging.

Our high temp batteries are encased in heat resistant PPO plastics, which is non-brominated and flame retardant (UL 94 VO) with a LOI of at least 28%. These advanced plastics mean our batteries can withstand operating temps of between -40⁰C to +65⁰C (-40⁰F to +149⁰F).

Our high temp batteries are ideal for applications such as telecom backup, cable TV, emergency lighting, railway, switchgear, oil and gas and more.

Long Life

The NSB RED Battery® delivers long life for reliable and unreliable grid conditions. It's an ideal choice if high temperature is not an issue, but you want long life in the 20⁰ to 35⁰C (68⁰ to 95⁰F) range, regardless of the electric grid quality.

It uses NorthStar’s pure lead – long life (TPPL) technology to deliver recharge times of 6 hours from 50% state of charge (SoC) to full charge.

For most customers the NSB RED Battery® will still be the preferred choice, providing the optimal balance between performance and price, while the NSB HT RED Battery® will be the battery of choice for more thermally demanding applications.

Our long life batteries are ideal for applications such as telecom backup, cable TV, emergency lighting, railway, switchgear, oil and gas and more.

High Rate

The NSB UPS Battery® delivers superior performance at high discharge rates down to <15 mins, with reduced battery dry-out, increased resistance and a shelf life of up to 24 months.

Modern data centers are demanding discharge rates of as low as 1 minute, so we have recently enhanced our high rate batteries to ensure your network stays online, with fast recharging so your backup power is ready when you need it.

Our unique pure lead electrochemistry increases power density and temp resistance, while reducing corrosion and component aging. And the advanced plastic casings mean our batteries can withstand operating temps of -40⁰C to +65⁰C (-40⁰F to +149⁰F).

Our high rate batteries are ideal for use in datacenters, industrial and UPS applications.

AGM Thin Plate Pure Lead Transportation Batteries

NorthStar transportation batteries deliver superior cranking, unrivaled cycling, faster recharge, high vibration resistance and virtually no internal grid growth.

The pure lead electrochemistry ensures exceptional CCA ratings for starting, and more than enough reserve capacity cycling to power the advanced onboard electronics of modern vehicles.

Our advanced manufacturing means we can use pure lead, so our batteries don't suffer from faster corrosion and component aging. The high compression construction of our transportation batteries means they can withstand punishing trips across choppy water or rough ground without the risk of failure.

Our transportation batteries are designed for a wide range of applications including automotive, marine, heavy duty, RVs, racing, emergency, and mass transit.

AGM Thin Plate Lead Carbon Batteries

The NSB BLUE+ Battery® delivers ultra fast recharge and exceptional PSoC cycling performance, with a design life 12+ years at 20°C (68°F) and a shelf life of up to 24 months.

To create a thin plate lead carbon battery, we start with conventional lead-acid chemistry and add carbon components to the negative electrodes. While the carbon components do not change the basic electrochemistry, they increase specific power and reduce a chemical reaction called sulfation that occurs during charging cycles and is the principal reason ordinary lead-acid batteries fail.

The NSB BLUE+ Battery® uses more lead per capacity than normal AGM batteries and it uses specially selected carbon additives to enhance charge acceptance and endurance in partial state of charge. It also uses a higher compression in order to keep the active mass in place for harsh servicing conditions.

The enhanced cyclic performance and fast recharging makes NorthStar thin plate lead carbon batteries ideal for telecom backup, electric vehicles, energy storage, renewable energy, hybrid genset applications
