Frequently Asked Questions

Who is NorthStar?
NorthStar is a global leader in designing, manufacturing and deploying an innovative range of batteries and site solutions. The company was established in 2000 by a group of industry leaders in lead-acid battery manufacturing, who together hold more than 100 years of experience. NorthStar products are so reliable and cost effective they are used in Telecom Power Systems, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, and Engine Start applications in more than 120 countries.

Why do Pure Lead Technology batteries have higher ratings?
Conventional lead acid batteries use lead alloys with additives which increase the strength so they can withstand the handling during the battery making process. The downside of using these alloys and additives is that the batteries suffer from faster corrosion and component aging.

The manufacturing process used by NorthStar eliminates the need for these alloys and additives. Our state-of-the-art battery plant in Missouri, USA, uses the latest automated manufacturing to produce 99.9% Pure Lead positive grid plates. These plates can be made thinner and larger, which means more can be added to generate greater surface area for active material reactions, which increases power density. This is why NorthStar batteries can deliver exceptional CCA ratings and reserve capacity cycling ability, with a longer lifetime and virtually no internal grid growth. And unlike conventional batteries, Pure Lead batteries never experience catastrophic failures.

What is the average cycle life of NorthStar batteries?
In extreme applications, NorthStar batteries have a life expectancy up to 4 times greater that a flooded lead acid battery and over 2 times greater than a conventional AGM products.

Where can I find the technical specifications of NorthStar batteries?
You can find tech specs and datasheets by locating your product in the Products section.

Where can I buy NorthStar Batteries?
Contact us to find your local distributor or look on our Distributors section.

What testing is currently ongoing or will NorthStar be performing any tests?
All batteries are tested internally to ensure they meet published specifications and are tested at JBI Laboratories, an industry accepted independent company, to verify our ratings.

Do we require special MSDS Sheets or NorthStar products?
Yes material safety datasheets are required for every product produced.

Do NorthStar AGM batteries have to be segregated for recycling?
No special handling is required – the recycling process is exactly the same as all flooded and conventional AGM products.

Can the branches receive the same packaging from NorthStar that they currently use when shipping the product via Fed Ex, UPS, USPS, or Air?
Yes, the NorthStar custom packaging is available at a cost of $8.00 per package and can greatly simply shipping small quantities with the couriers listed above. This packaging can be useful for your customers with e‐commerce sites that want to begin selling the NorthStar batteries on the web, considering they are approved to be shipped anywhere in North America through all transportation options.

Will there be a list of vehicles that we do not want to sell product into because of their alternators?
No, the number of vehicles and systems that exist today would make it difficult to identify, manage and update a list on a regular basis. So instead we have set charging the charging parameters of between 14.1 volts and 14.8 volts as an acceptable charging range. So long as the battery charging remains within these tolerances the battery will perform to its engineered specifications. It is recommended that for every application the customer test the charging voltage to ensure it is within the acceptable limits.

Why can AGM batteries sit so long without needing charging?
Higher impurity levels are one item that can greatly accelerate self discharge and shorten shelf life. The high purity lead used in the NorthStar grids and plates contain very low impurity levels giving it very long shelf life characteristics.

Will an AGM battery sulfate?
Yes, but no battery should ever be left in a discharged state. Pure Lead AGM batteries will sulfate to much less a degree than a flooded battery. Design features include high compression AGM separators with fine fibers and high surface provide further resistance to sulfating.

How do we handle a warranty?
The frequency of warranties will be less for the NorthStar AGM products but they are handled in the same way as any other battery. They do however have different warranty terms most notably no pro‐rated warranty portion.

I see NorthStar Batteries are now available online can they be easily shipped?
Yes, NorthStar batteries can be shipped via FedEx and UPS. Certain weight restrictions apply, so your customers with ecommerce capabilities can sell and ship the batteries to retail customers, especially in remote areas.
